Go 04:16
Lover your head is down your eyes are on the floor No matter what we give it leaves us wanting more But you, you know which way to go For all the empty hours and restless afternoons For all the faded flowers of dreams we spoke too soon You, you know which way to go But there’s no harbor here There’s only danger near Cliffs above and rocks below And though I want you close This light, it only glows To warn you far away from shore Saying “I love you, now go” I’m sounding the foghorn, lowly echoes ‘cross the bay And the beacon of the tower lights the way So you, you know which way to go Well I won’t have another wreck upon my watch But I can’t tell you what to do, I know this much And you, you know which way to go But there’s no harbor here There’s only danger near Cliffs above and rocks below I don’t want to waste your time But this light can only shine To warn you far away from shore Saying “I love you, now go” I love you, now go Go I’m still dreaming of your eyes, your mouth, your touch But I won’t have another wreck upon my watch And you, you know which way to go

Baptistina 03:19
A change of plans One chapter opens as another ends So we begin One lucky hand Switch out the sequence till it makes a man No blind watchmaker winding up the strand Baptistina Come crashing down, come crashing No god but change No church but ashes and remains No prayer but waking up to face the day So face the day, face the day Baptistina Come crashing down, come crashing Come bright white light Come wipe the slate clean Come burning sky Red rain and roiling sea Let the small self go Set these atoms free To be swallowed by the new Whatever it may be Hello, goodbye Quick as the shutter of an eye Baptistina Come crashing down, come crashing

I’ve been harboring fugitives I’ve been wondering how to live In a station so opposite To the world I thought I was in All the time that I’ve been away Weary wanderer sleepless stray It’s no wonder we’re wanting more Miracle we that we came this far All this love is still here But how could we not feel The gravity of years And my criminal career I still see your shade everywhere From Olympia to Jaisalmer I will carry you in my heart As I did from the very start All this love is still here But how could we not feel The gravity of years And my criminal career I just want to see you open Unafraid and golden Like I’ve always known you to be Believe me All this love is still here But how could we not feel The gravity of years And my criminal career

I’m leaving Oldtown With no direction, learning how to be alone Learning how to stand on my own two feet I’m getting good now A recollection, hollow as a sparrow bone Mythic as the stories our parents told It’s getting colder The days are shorter It’s not the season for the road Blow out the candle Pack up your bedroll I think it’s time to go I’m leaving Oldtown I’m bags and boxes, hand me downs and borrowed rooms Still hoping to be loved anew I need a new town Where no-one knows me, no-one heeds a thing I do And no-one’s ever heard of you It’s getting colder The days are shorter It’s not the season for the road Blow out the candle Pack up your bedroll I think it’s time to go I need a new town I need a new town It’s getting colder The days are shorter It’s not the season for the road Blow out the candle Pack up your bedroll She says it’s time to go I’m leaving Oldtown I’m leaving Oldtown

You can’t just love the easy ones You can’t just love the easy ones You’ve got to let them in when you’d rather just run You can’t just love the easy ones You can’t just play the simple songs You can’t just play the simple songs You gotta knuckle down ’til your fingers are raw You can’t just play the simple songs When I can face the ones I fear It’ll all become clear Oh when I embrace the ones I fear It’ll all become clear You can’t just walk the shortest road You can’t just walk the shortest road You’ve got to straighten your back ‘neath the heaviest load You can’t just walk the shortest road When I can face the ones I fear It’ll all become clear Oh when I embrace the ones I fear It’ll all become clear For all the suffering souls beside me I pray love will guide me I pray love will guide me home You can’t just love the easy ones You can’t just love the easy ones You’ve got to let them in deep when you’d rather just run You can’t just love the easy ones

Amnesty 03:46
Kisses at the door, gather round the table Papers lay in wait, envelopes to mail Barking at my heels, I’m trying to be stable Just leave me in the bag I’m going soon again Dreaming of unpacking, some day I can stay I’ll call you when I can, it’s just another day Home feels a million miles tonight Hope feels a little hard to find I’m here to catch some kind of spark In every face I see And offer amnesty, offer amnesty Points along the path, moments strung together Give up on arrival, trying to remember Everything should matter, nothing lasts forever Oh how could I have known it’s braver to surrender Cast off your coat and shiver in the weather All the time I wasted chasing buried treasure Home feels a million miles tonight Hope feels a little hard to find I’m trying to get some glimpse of grace From across this endless sea Would you offer amnesty? Would you offer amnesty? And I can’t go home now No I can’t go home, I can’t go I can’t go Home feels a million miles tonight Hope feels a little hard to find We’re all stumbling towards the light And we beg to be released Would you offer amnesty? Would you offer amnesty?

Oh you sisters encircled, you children of mine You humble my heart and sharpen my mind Though we’re scattered and wearied and change is upon us We are bound ‘til the end, still a family I promise Though all that you love will be taken some day By the angel of death or the servants of change In a floodwater tide without rancor or rage Sing loud while you’re able in grief and in praise For so many years we swam into the tide And we would not abandon, heroic and kind Shared our sweat and our shelter, our bodies and blood Godspeed and good fortune, I will miss you my love For all you hold dear will be taken some day By the angel of death or the servants of change In a floodwater tide without rancor or rage So sing loud while you’re able in grief and in praise Now we meet at well of sorrow Dug down to the heart of the earth To be joined at its source to the spring of hope Drink deep while you can and give thanks for your thirst For all that you love will be taken some day By the angel of death or the servants of change In a floodwater tide without rancor or rage So sing loud while you’re able in grief and in praise Sing loud while you’re able In grief and in praise

Unwritten 03:17
No fail no learning No risk no earning No loss no returning No bitter no sweetness No rain no harvest No hope no solace Unwritten songs are not sung Unspoken love will fade Unlock the door to your heart Enter the dawning day Unlock the door No pain no pleasure No work no leisure No quest no treasure No cry no laughter No pulse no dancer No end no hereafter Unwritten songs are not sung Unspoken love will fade Untie the knots of your fear Enter the dawning day Unlock the door Unlock the door
9.
Hold on, no I don’t need to talk Far gone and the words are too small There’s always more Roots bare, fragile and free So scared of the part I can’t see There’s always more A trace between what will be And what came before

Held Up 03:31
I’ve been dreaming of the day of judgment Wondering what I’ll say For the seasons I lost to sorrow The sin of my wasted days For the beauty I should have noticed The kindness I did not give The bounty I took for granted The life that I could have lived Held up at the gates of heaven Held up before the light Stretched out ‘til it was transparent There was nowhere I could hide The preacher he talks of glory Of streets to be paved in gold He’s got a book and he’s got a story And we all have heard it told Well I wonder how he came to thinking That he’s speaking for someone above ‘Cause the only rule I know is true There’s no limit to the reach of love No limit to the reach of love Held up at the gates of heaven Held up before the light Stretched out ‘til I was transparent There was nowhere I could hide Sent back to the living world I’ve got so much more to learn Everybody makes the same mistakes Everybody takes their turn How can you sit in judgment How do you cast that stone When everybody here’s a sinner And everybody feels alone Brother you ain’t so broken Sister you ain’t so small Everybody leaves together Or nobody goes at all Held up at the gates of heaven Held up before the light Stretched out till I was transparent There was nothing I could hide Sent back to the living world I’ve got so much more to learn Everybody makes the same mistakes Everybody takes their turn Everybody makes the same mistakes And everybody takes their turn
11.
We won’t split the friends We won’t make the story sad We’ll find love again But think of all times we had We’ll rearrange the memories And reconstruct the diary So every detail will agree We’re perfect blameless friends If it’s such a happy story Then why should it end? I met you as a boy You held me in your warm embrace I still feel young at heart So how’d I get this aging face? We’ll rearrange the memories And reconstruct the diary So every detail will agree We’re perfect blameless friends If it’s such a happy story Then why should it end? If it’s such a happy story Why should it end?
12.
Well the earth is flat and grass don’t grow The Northeastern winters hardly ever snow There’s no price to love and there never was And nobody’s gonna get hurt The kids don’t need a thing and they always do the dishes The laundry does itself and we are granted all our wishes If it’s meant to be, it’s easy And nobody’s gonna get hurt The highway wasn’t made for leaving Whiskey wasn’t made for regret The smoke in my lungs makes it easier to breathe And broken hearts will always mend I will always feel this way, I will never leave your side I won’t lose myself to fear or lose you to my pride I will speak less often but I will speak the truth And nobody’s gonna get hurt The highway wasn’t made for leaving Whiskey wasn’t made for regret The smoke in my lungs makes it easier to breathe And broken hearts will always mend Nobody, nobody, nobody’s gonna get hurt Nobody, nobody, nobody’s gonna get hurt Lovers don’t lie, time is merciful We are always gonna stay young and beautiful And I will shoulder all the blame if we can’t make this work So nobody’s gonna get hurt Nobody’s gonna get hurt The highway wasn’t made for leaving Whiskey wasn’t made for regret The smoke in my lungs makes it easier to breathe And if you love someone enough it never ends Nobody, nobody, nobody’s gonna get hurt Nobody, nobody, nobody’s gonna get hurt

about

Taking on life’s difficult transitions, Glen Phillips delivers some of his most vulnerable songs yet on his release SWALLOWED BY THE NEW. The album features the bonus track “Nobody’s Gonna Get Hurt” which was co-written with Lori McKenna and showcases backing vocals from Amber Rubarth. SWALLOWED BY THE NEW is the most intensely personal album of his career, reflecting his mastery for converting raw emotion into sound.

Phillips has been making music for over two decades, starting as the 14-year-old frontman of Toad the Wet Sprocket. Since then, he’s accumulated an esteemed body of work comprising eight albums with Toad (which collectively have sold close to 4 million units) and three as a solo artist. ABC News had this to say of his solo work, “Songwritingwise, Phillips continues to come off like an American answer to Crowded House’s Neil Finn. Both men are masters at delivering dense, seemingly effortlessly-crafted songs rich with context and depth.”
